PNGGauntlet 2.0.1
Just a quick update, I just uploaded a new version of PNGGauntlet that fixes a couple of annoying bugs, as well as making it so you can use the “Open With” menu to open files in PNGGauntlet. Just right click, select “Open With”, select “Choose Default Program”, and browse for PNGGauntlet.exe in its install folder. Be sure to uncheck “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file” if you want PNGGauntlet to just show up in the menu instead of always opening for that type of file.

Grab the updated file from the PNGGauntlet homepage and enjoy your smaller PNGs.

Thanks for this great utility!
One thing that I’ve notice is that it sometimes replace my png’s if the size is bigger?!
Another thing, the settings dont seem to do anything(well for me). Do you know why these compressed images dont open correct in programs such as PaintShopPro & PhotoShop?

What do you mean they don’t open correctly? And what do you mean the settings don’t do anything? And I’m pretty sure it skips the file if it would make it bigger.

Hi Ben
I made two example files for you to compress using the default settings.
http://stashbox.org/175400/png_examples.7z
[example_smaller_replace.PNG]
This file will be replaced with the 107% size version
[example_broken_edit.png]
This file can be edit in programs such as PaintShopPro x2 & PhotoShop but after compress the alpha transparency is lost completely. The file still shows correct in other programs such as webbrowsers & winamp, they just cant be edited anymore. If there was a setting to make them workable in edit apps it would be great. Even if they are bigger then. I tried playing with the settings but the result dont seem to change at all (and the size stays the same with all settings)
I want to incourage this program for all Winamp skinners but atm that is quite a big problem. Nullsoft also wants to use it but dont want to brake the edit because most people use their default skins to start of.
Hope you can do something about the above 2 issues

Can you reproduce the bug? ;)

Hey pjn123,
I had some time to look at things tonight, and you’re right on both counts. One’s a bug in PNGGauntlet and the other is a bug in Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop! I’ve documented the problem with the missing alpha channel here:
http://brh.numbera.com/software/pnggauntlet/help/#lostalpha
Unfortunately I also discovered that I somehow failed to wire up the PNGOUT Settings panel to the rest of PNGGauntlet, so you can’t actually change any of the settings. I’ll fix that ASAP.
The problem with the file getting replaced when it’s larger is because it ends in “.PNG” instead of “.png”. I’ve fixed that in my development copy of PNGGauntlet that I’ll be shipping out as an update soon.
